Né en 1564 à Stradford-upon-Avon, William Shakespeare fit ses études à la Grammar School, qu'il quitta vers l'âge de onze ans pour des raisons qu'on ignore. À l'âge de 18 ans, il se mariait déjà avec la fille d'un fermier dont il eut trois enfants. C'est à ce moment que l'on perd sa trace pour la retrouver environ dix ans plus tard, lorsqu'on le voit à Londres en tant qu'acteur et dramaturge jouissant d'une certaine renommée. Ses grands poèmes lyriques Vénus et Adonis et Le viol de Lucrèce lui valent l'amitié du jeune compte de Southampton, Henry Wriothesley, souvent identifié au mystérieux dédicataire des célèbres Sonnets. En 1594, Shakespeare devient actionnaire dans la compagnie d'acteurs du lord chambellan nouvellement constituée et se consacre entièrement à la création de pièces de théâtre et à leur mise en scène. Privée du terrain dont elle disposait jusqu'alors, la troupe se voit obligée de passer du côté sud de la Tamise. C'est là que les acteurs construisent le rond bâtiment en bois, devenu le fameux Globe Theatre où Shakespeare créa ses pièces les plus connues. Ses comédies (Le Songe d'une nuit d'été, Les Joyeuses Commères de Windsor) et ses fresques historiques, mettant en scène une foule de personnages contemporains (Richard III) ou antiques (Julius Caesar), connaissent un grand succès auprès du public élisabéthain.
Le climat de désillusion politique qui s'installe après la mort de la reine et les malheurs personnels qui accablent la vie de Shakespeare ouvrent la voie à une période beaucoup plus sombre et amère dans son œuvre. C'est alors qu'il écrit ses grandes tragédies, Hamlet, Othello et Le Roi Lear. S'étant enrichi considérablement, le dramaturge se retire dans sa ville natale où il crée ses dernières pièces, parmi lesquelles La Tempête, qui sont marquées d'une sérénité que certains qualifient de chrétienne.
On a souvent émis des doutes quant à la vraie identité du plus grand dramaturge anglais, en qualifiant Shakespeare d'un simple prête-nom. De nos jours, cette hypothèse est considérée comme très peu probable, mais le mystère qui continue à planer autour de la personnalité du poète contribue à le transformer en une vraie légende.
