From Meteorology to Engineering Applications
This book highlights the recent progress in understanding the winds in the Atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) contributing to clarifying the vertical structure of mean wind and turbulence in the ABL and their roles in wind engineering, civil structural design, and wind energy applications. The behaviors of ABL over different types of surfaces, including the urban, suburban, rural, open, and sea surfaces, are explained. Vertical profiles of mean wind speed and direction, as well as turbulence properties, e.g., turbulence intensity, gust factor and peak factor, turbulence integral length scale, and wind spectra, are discussed. The atmospheric stability effects, diurnal variation, hazardous windstorms (e.g., tropical cyclones, thunderstorms, and tornadoes), and long-term wind climatology are included in the discussion. New findings about the wind characteristics in the ABL are presented in this book owing to the access to and analysis of data from a comprehensive weather monitoring network and a very tall meteorological tower. This book helps bridge the gaps between meteorologists and wind engineers and facilitate the design and operation of civil structures against wind actions

Dr. Junyi He is currently a research fellow at Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, City University of Hong Kong. He received BEng in Civil and Structural Engineering and PhD in Wind Engineering from City University. His research interest is in wind engineering and wind energy development. Dr. HE has also served as a Guest Editor for Atmosphere and a Review Editor for Frontiers in Built Environment.
Prof. Qiu-Sheng Li is Chair Professor of Civil Engineering and the director of Architecture and Civil Engineering Research Centre at City University of Hong Kong. He graduated from Shanghai Jiao-Tong University with BEng in 1984 and from Harbin Institute of Technology with MEng in 1987. He obtained his PhD from Monash University in 1996 and his PhD thesis was awarded Professor K.H. Hunt Medal (the best thesis award). Before joining City University in 1996, Prof. Li had seven years of working experience as an engineer at the Kajima Corporation in Japan and as a consulting engineer in MEL Consultants Pty. Ltd in Australia. During this period, he was involved in numerous wind engineering and structural dynamic studies on major building and structural developments in Asia and Pacific region. His main research interests and technical expertise are in wind engineering, structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, computational mechanics, reliability and risk assessment. He has published four books on wind engineering, structural health monitoring, earthquake engineering and structural reliability. Prof. Li is one of the most cited researchers in civil engineering. According to the latest World Author Ranking, in terms of citations and influences of his publications, Prof. Li was ranked 10th globally in the field of civil engineering. Prof. Li has received several awards for his academic contributions including Outstanding Overseas Young Scientist Award offered by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2004 and The First-Class Award of the Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Education of China in 2010. He was appointed as Cheung Kong Chair Professor by the Ministry of Education of China and Li Ka Shing Foundation, Hong Kong in 2007. Prof. Li is the recipient of the 2016 Jack E. Cermak Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers in recognition of his "many contributions to wind engineering that range from fundamental to applied research, especially structural dynamics studies on major building developments in Asia and the Pacific region". In 2020, Prof. Li has been awarded the Robert H. Scanlan Medal by the American Society of Civil Engineers for his "outstanding contributions to wind engineering and structural mechanics from fundamental research to engineering applications". Currently, he is an associate editor of Journal of Structural Engineering, ASCE and an editorial board member for several international journals.
