David Morrell est né en 1943 à Kitchener au Canada. En 1966, il déménage aux États-Unis pour suivre les cours d'un écrivain qu'il admire particulièrement, Philip Young, et il obtient un doctorat en littérature américaine. Il publie son premier roman, Premier sang, en 1972, alors qu'il est professeur à l'université de l'Iowa.
