Née en 1896 en Angleterre, Dodie Smith fait des études de théâtre et commence sa carrière dramatique en 1931 avec Automn Crocus . En 1939, elle rejoint les États-Unis et commence à écrire pour Hollywood. Elle adopte un dalmatien qui sera son inspiration pour Les cent un dalmatiens , publié en 1956. Elle meurt en 1990. Si c’est son œuvre pour la jeunesse qui l’a rendue célèbre, elle a aussi écrit de nombreux romans pour adultes.
