Scott Mainwaring is the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor for Brazil Studies at the Harvard Kennedy School. His research interests include democratic institutions and democratization; authoritarian and democratic regimes; and political parties and party systems. His book with Aníbal Pérez-Liñán, Democracies and Dictatorships in Latin America: Emergence, Survival, and Fall (Cambridge, 2013) won prizes for the best book awarded by the Comparative Democratization section of the American Political
